Oxiracetam
This note is educational and is not personal medical advice. Effects vary by baseline status, dose, product quality, medications, sleep debt, diet, and health conditions.
Summary / What it does
Oxiracetam is the most stimulating of the classical racetams. It is valued for sharp logical focus, faster processing speed, and mental energy rather than emotional warmth or creativity. It has a longer half-life than most racetams, which supports sustained effects but makes evening dosing risky for sleep.
Useful cross-links: Glutamate, AMPA, NMDA Modulation, Wakefulness & Arousal, Cholinergic System. Its effects are best evaluated through the Acute & Instant Effects pattern rather than as a single isolated effect.
How it works in the brain (detailed scientific mechanisms)
Oxiracetam modulates AMPA receptor desensitization similarly to other racetams, but its activation of protein kinase C (PKC) is more pronounced and is associated with glutamatergic enhancement in the hippocampus and cortex. PKC activation can potentiate both AMPA and NMDA receptor signaling, which may account for the stronger subjective stimulation and cognitive sharpening reported compared to piracetam or aniracetam.
Oxiracetam also increases release and utilization of acetylcholine and glutamate in hippocampal and cortical synapses. The higher cholinergic demand makes choline supplementation especially important. Its longer half-life of 8-10 hours means that a morning dose continues influencing neural activity into the evening, which is both an advantage for sustained performance and a liability for sleep architecture.

Different variations/forms
Capsules or powder are the main forms. No significant formulation variation exists for nootropic use.
Time to action / onset
Most users notice effects within 30-60 minutes. The stimulating quality may be noticeable from the first dose.
Half-life
Approximately 8-10 hours — the longest of the commonly used racetams. Morning dosing is strongly preferred.
Dosage
Typical range is 800-2400 mg/day in two divided doses, both taken in the morning or early afternoon. Pairing with Alpha-GPC (300–600 mg/day) or Citicoline (250–500 mg/day) is important given increased cholinergic demand.
Positive effects
Positive effects may include sharper logical thinking, faster information processing, focused mental energy, enhanced sensory acuity, and memory encoding support in responders.
Reported Effects
Users describe oxiracetam as producing a “cleaner” mental state — thoughts feel organized, logic flows more naturally, and concentration is maintained without the jitteriness of stimulants. It is commonly used during analytical work, studying, or problem-solving. Negative reports include insomnia, headaches from choline deficiency, irritability, and a sense that the mind is overstimulated without productive direction.
Side effects / contraindications
Side effects include insomnia (especially with afternoon dosing), headache, irritability, overstimulation, and cholinergic imbalance.
Where it is found in food or nature (natural sources)
Oxiracetam is fully synthetic with no natural food sources.
Protocol
Take 800–1600 mg in the morning with food, pairing with Alpha-GPC (300 mg) or Citicoline (250 mg). A second dose at midday is acceptable if needed. Due to the 8-10 hour half-life, never take after noon if sleep is a priority. Avoid combining with caffeine or other stimulants until individual tolerance is established. Assess over 1–2 weeks before adjusting dose.
Key Research
- Cavoy et al. (1994): Oxiracetam improved spatial learning and memory in aged rodent models through hippocampal acetylcholine and glutamate enhancement.
- Zanotti et al. (1994): Oxiracetam reversed scopolamine-induced memory deficits in rodent models, confirming cholinergic interaction.
- Bottini et al. (1992): Small clinical trial in dementia patients found oxiracetam improved cognitive performance over placebo at 1600 mg/day.
Forms & Sourcing
Available as powder or capsules from Nootropics Depot and Science.bio. Less widely available than piracetam but generally accessible in the US as an unscheduled research compound. Legal status varies internationally. Confirm vendor testing documentation.
Other notes
Oxiracetam is best suited for analytical work and tasks requiring sustained focus. Its stimulating profile makes it complementary to Aniracetam (warm/creative) rather than stacked with it. Part of the Racetams family.
